Frequently Asked Questions
? What are the age groups for summer zoo camp?
For 2008 we will be running programs for children aged 6 to 9 for all weeks except two which we will be running for age 10 to 12 (July 14 - 18 and August 11 - 15).
? Where are programs like zoo camp held?
All of our programs begin and end, unless otherwise arranged, at the Zoo Education Centre. We are located at the south gate entrance of the zoo on Corydon Ave. This gate is only open to the general public in the summer but is open for educational programming year round.
? Are there behind the scenes visits?
Participants in each camp will have several opportunities to go behind the scenes over the course of the week. Due to the number of children in camp and the small number of number of zoo keeping staff available for zoo programming however, we can only schedule a limited number of special visits per week. However, the children will have opportunities to meet with our interpretive staff, along with some of our handleable animals (e.g. snake, turtle, various insects) throughout the week.
? Are there refunds or exchanges?
- If you cancel with more than 10 business day’s notice you will receive a refund of 90% of the program fee.
- If you cancel with less than 10 business days notice receive a refund of 75% of the program fee.
- No refunds are given for cancellations with less than two (2) business day’s notice.
- Please note: We reserve the right to expel unmanageable participants without financial compensation and full payment must be received to guarantee placement.
? Can we put our child in the same camp as their friend?
Yes. If you are mailing in the registrations, please include a note with the name of your child’s friend. A separate registration form is required for each child. If there is not enough space in the camp, you will be contacted before we can proceed with the registration.
? Can we put children of different age groups together?
We place children together that are in the same age group in order to plan a program that is appropriate for their age and to facilitate positive social interactions, i.e. ages 6-7, 8-9, 9-10, 11-12. We do not like to mix ages, unless specifically requested and it wll not affect the enjoyment of the program of any of the participants.
? What if my child has special needs or a disability?
Children who are in regular school classrooms and have an aide are normally able to attend. We do not have staff that can work with your child one on one so your child must be accompanied by an aide. Parents can call the Education Supervisor at 982-0664 for further information. Our education building and all public zoo buildings are wheelchair accessible but not all of our behind the scenes areas.
? Is there before and after care?
We do not offer before and after care. Drop off is between 8:30 and 9:00 am and pick up is between 4:00 and 4:30 pm. Each time a parent does not drop off or pick up their children between the scheduled times they will be charged a $5.00 fee, which must be paid before 9:00 am by the beginning of the next camp day.
? My child attended camps last year will the program be the same?
No and yes. Each year new programs are planned by our qualified staff to ensure that a new theme, activities, crafts and games are planned for each camp. On few occasions a repeat activity or special visit is planned if it proved very popular in the past.
? Is the camp 100% allergy free?
No. We take allergies seriously but cannot guarantee that the program is completely free of food or environmental allergens. The Zoo Education Centre and many of the zoo’s other buildings may expose your child to allergens like nuts and seeds, hay, animal hair or dust.
We also promote a policy of no food sharing. We ask all campers to make their lunches and snacks peanut and nut free but cannot guarantee that this is always happening.
